A little message from Dodi z"l, a close friend and strong supporter of DROR: How is a person like a tree?
"1. Roots are firmly rooted in the ground, and constantly absorb water and nutrients and move them upward (against the force of gravity), even in the harshest of weather and when the tree looks barren. A person should root herself to Torah and constantly be absorbing its nutrients, in order to grow upward (spiritually). To absorb Torah even in the most difficult of times. Then, one’s roots will grow ever stronger, one’s spiritual stature will grow ever taller, one will never fall even in the hardest of times, and one will ultimately bear fruit.
We are the opposite of the tree in that the trees' roots grow into the ground; the more they are rooted in the ground, the stronger the tree. For us, the more we are rooted in שמים, the stronger we are spiritually.
2. Just like a tree needs constant nurturing in order to grow tall and strong, and bear fruit, so too we need to constantly work on ourselves in order to grow spiritually. The seed won’t grow by itself.
3. Just like each tree needs its unique nurturing, so each child/person needs his or her own unique nurturing. Parents and teachers need to be supports for the child just like a tree needs the stick when it is small and still weak. This doesn’t mean the parents and teachers make the child like themselves, just as the tree doesn’t take on the qualities of the stick. Rather it supports the tree/child so that he can grow in his own unique way.
